20世紀は、デザインが大きく飛躍し、人々の暮らしや価値観を根底から変えた時代でした。本展では、その象徴ともいえる「椅子」に焦点を当て、時代ごとの思想や技術、美意識の変遷を紐解きます。

椅子は単なる家具ではなく、現代デザインの変遷を映し出す存在です。時代ごとの美的トレンドは形や装飾に表れ、新素材や生産技術の進化は新たな構造や表現を可能にしてきました。また、働き方や生活様式の変化は椅子の役割や用途にも影響を与えてきました。このように椅子には、美・技術・社会など多様な要素が凝縮されており、その変化を追うことで現代デザインの歴史を読み解くことができます。

今回の展示では1930年代からのモダニズムにおける機能主義から1980年代のポストモダンにおける実験的表現まで、素材、構造、人間工学、そして文化的背景が交差する中で生まれた名作の数々を紹介します。それぞれの椅子は、単なる家具を超え、その時代の空気やデザイナーの思想を体現しています。

The 20th century was an era in which design made great leaps forward, fundamentally transforming people’s lifestyles and values. This exhibition focuses on the “chair,” a symbol of that transformation, and unravels the shifts in ideas, technologies, and aesthetics across different periods.

The aesthetic trends of each era are expressed through form and decoration, while advancements in new materials and production techniques have enabled fresh structures and modes of expression.
